We are the Exclusive Worldwide
Distributor of the TEMPOWATCH™
Thanks for visiting our TEMPOWATCH™ web site. In 1969 Cecil Effinger
invented the TEMPOWATCH™ at the insistence of the late famed conductor,
Robert Shaw.
During the past 30+ years, the TEMPOWATCH™ has been the CONDUCTOR'S
TOOL OF CHOICE used by thousands of professional and amateur choral,
orchestral and band conductors and musicians throughout the world.
It is a one-of-a-kind tool. In fact, it is the ONLY music device that
quickly and quietly tells you what your tempo IS while conducting,
listening, composing or teaching.
Think of it as "opposite of the metronome" that sets the tempo....the
TEMPOWATCH™ tells you what your tempo actually IS at the time it
happens! An incredibly valuable device!
Please take a few moments and read our web page as it outlines the many
uses of the TEMPOWATCH™ and how it can benefit your musical needs. As
always, we welcome your questions and comments.
Best regards,

ABOUT THE TEMPOWATCH™
To know tempo as it happens is a constant need for every musician. The
TEMPOWATCH™ fills this need precisely, quietly and quickly.
Heretofore there has not been generally available to the music
profession a convenient, practical and accurate instrument for this
purpose.
The metronome, for all its importance to music in the last two
centuries, is essentially an instrument to establish a tempo which has
been predetermined in beats per minute. But the metronome is, for
several reasons, quite impractical in the reverse process, this is, to
identify the actual tempo as the music is being played or imagined.
The TEMPOWATCH™ concept of tempo determination is, on the other hand,
essentially the opposite to that of the metronome.
Instead of giving you the tempo to take, it gives you the tempo you are
taking or have taken, an infinitely more useful bit of information in
almost all practical situations.
HERE'S HOW THE TEMPOWATCH™ WORKS:
Counting in tempo at any point in your music composition, start the TEMPOWATCH™ at the count of ONE
(1) and stop precisely on SEVEN (7).
You have the exact tempo immediately. Press once to reset, and
immediately check another tempo.
For example, a conductor may check his tempo at any time without
interrupting the rehearsal. The sweep hand of the TEMPOWATCH™ indicates
the tempo at a glance.
More technically, the TEMPOWATCH™ is provided with special dial
divisions converting time into units on the basis of six full beats and
allowing a direct reading of from 34 to 360 beats per minute.
The reason for the six unit basis is that for the most common meters
found in music the count of seven (which embraces the six full beats)
is especially convenient.
This provides the possibility of stopping and starting the TEMPOWATCH™
on strong metric beats.
Some of the many uses of the TEMPOWATCH™ may be readily envisioned in
the following suggested situations:
- the conductor or composer at rehearsal or performance
- the composer or arranger marking a new score
- the private teacher during the lesson
- the student at practice
- the bandsman on the field
- the engineer in recording, TV, radio
- the choreographer at rehearsal
- the librarian or historian checking recordings
- the music director in the entertainment field
- the adjudicator or music contest judge
A very important advantage of the TEMPOWATCH™ is its applicability in measuring tempo fluctuations during
performance.
Although in much music fluctuation is not intended, in contemporary
music, for instance, tempo fluctuation is increasingly important and
must be controlled with precision.
The TEMPOWATCH™ catches these fluctuations readily in either case, and
this may be done several times per minute, if desired.
Another advantage of the TEMPOWATCH™ is its capability (and
availability) in precisely identifying, on the spur of the moment, a
tempo which in practice or performance proves to be particularly
“right”.
In addition to the tempo-determination
function, the TEMPOWATCH™ has two other significant uses:
1) The dial has half-second
divisions as well as ten minute register; therefore the TEMPOWATCH™ may
be used as a timer, either for split-second timing as might be required
in recording or film making, or for longer durations such as the timing
of sections of music, movements of larger works or complete
compositions.
2) Although the concept of the
TEMPOWATCH™ is opposite to that of the metronome, it may, with
practice, serve the metronome function as well, that is, to establish
predetermined tempi.
Your TEMPOWATCH™ goes with you easily. Developed by composer-inventor
CECIL EFFINGER, it is a superior timepiece in aluminum case of modern
